A Young Man's Thoughtless Drinking Leads To A DWI And Time In The Municipal Jail
Richard had a particularly hard time maintaining a job. If truth be told, because of his inactivity and lack of incentive, he was out of a job far more frequently than he was gainfully employed. And when he did land a job, he had a particularly hard time getting to work when his shift started, he usually got less than acceptable performance appraisals, and he called off sick so habitually that he commonly got fired a few weeks after he started working.
To no one's astonishment, one of the consequences of Richard's less than acceptable work track record was the fact that he was virtually penniless from day-to-day. In spite of Richard's less than great work record and financial laxity, nevertheless, by hook or by crook he made it a point to drink in an abusive and excessive manner from day-to-day.
So it came as no big surprise when Richard received a second DWI. When he went to court, the judge explained to Richard that his alcohol-related conduct was appalling and, consequently, he was going to sentence Richard to serve eleven months incarcerated in jail.
During his time in the county jail, Richard was required to learn more about alcohol abuse facts such as alcohol related outcomes and alcohol deaths, about the demoralizing outcomes of irresponsible and hazardous drinking, and he was required to get alcohol therapy. The judge stressed the fact that unless Richard receives professional alcohol therapy and discovers how to live an alcohol-free life, he will quite possibly be spending a considerable amount of time incarcerated in jail.
Richard stated that he understood what the magistrate was declaring but he still believed that placement in the municipal jail was not the most realistic punishment. The magistrate thought otherwise and proclaimed that it was his duty to keep alcohol dependent people off the streets who drink and drive and who get multiple DWIs. To give credibility to this perspective, the judge articulated some respected, extensively researched alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that emphasized some of the hurtful effects that are related to irresponsible and hazardous drinking such as alcohol related deaths.
Even though Richard realized that he drank in an excessive manner, he never believed that he was an alcohol addicted individual. So it was a big surprise when Richard started to have chronic alcoholism symptoms and signs and alcohol withdrawal symptoms nearly three hours after getting incarcerated.
To manage his alcohol withdrawal symptoms in a safe and sound manner, Richard was transferred to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation hospital for alcohol detoxification and then returned to the city jail. While behind bars Richard got alcohol rehab but due to the fact that he got this rehabilitation as something that was forced upon him, he was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his excessive and irresponsible drinking.
When his time in the municipal jail was completed, the judge forcefully told Richard that he would be under rigorous scrutiny and would be required to take random breathalyzer alcohol tests. After hearing how Richard was unsuccessful in taking ownership of his drinking situation and how he unenthusiastically followed the rehab protocol while behind bars, the magistrate knew that it was essentially a matter of time before he would be seeing Richard once again in court about his excessive and irresponsible drinking behavior.
As the magistrate thought about Richard's situation, he couldn't help but think about how some individuals never "get it" and learn how to live in a productive and adult manner.
