When Do You Need Laminate Floor Underlayment

The manufacturers of laminate floor advertise often that their products can just be quickly laid over onto the floor with the right laminate floor underlayment. That is why laminate flooring is very popular because people can just do the installation of laminate flooring on their own.

In most cases, the homes are ready for the laminate flooring without need of laminate floor underlayment. These floors are already flat and smooth and no need of flooring. This is true if you have a floor that has linoleum or tile and even wood. The laminate floor can be easily laid on top.

If you have floors that are uneven, or that has dents or holes that are huge, then you might need a laminate floor underlayment. Without the floor underlay, you risk damaging your laminate floor. With the holes as big as a ball, you can have a big hole on your home because the laminate floor will eventually fall into its shape. A depression on the floor will also result in a dent in the laminate floor.

Good and tested laminate floor underlayment can be a fiberboard or just plywood depending on the types of holes or irregularity in your floor. Usually you need to used about one-eight inch thick fiberboard for the major defects on the floor and plywood about three-quarter inch for the minor holes.

How To Prepare Laminate Floors And Sub Floor Joints

The direction and the position of laminate floor underlayment in relation to the entire house as well as outside lighting is an important aspect to consider. Typically you want the laminate flooring to run along with the sunlight and not across it.

Before you start on your laminate floor underlayment, first remember that the joints of the laminate flooring should be parallel with the wall. The underlay flooring should be position in perpendicular to the position of the laminate for durability. You cannot have both the underlay and the laminate in one direction. One should be perpendicular to the other.

It is important that the laminate floor underlayment should be completely and thoroughly smooth and clean. There should be nothing on the surface of the underlay. Furthermore, the use of underlay may be more practical if you have old homes and this will make sure that the floor is better reinforced. It is necessary that the floor surface should be smooth for best results and most old homes are already worn off.
